Edinburgh Castle is one of the most prominent sights in Edinburgh, located on the top of a hill overlooking the city. The castle has been developed since the 13th century and is open to the public to take tours and learn about the castle's colourful, medieval history.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is still used as a royal residence, when the Queen is hosting garden parties or as a stop over on her way to Balmoral for the summer holidays. Founded in the 12th century, the palace has an intriguing history including its former status as an abbey, the remains of which can still be seen. The palace is open to the public to take tours as long as the Queen isn't in town.
The Scottish Parliament Building is located at the foot of the royal mile just across from Holyrood Palace.
Opened in 2004 the building is considered to be one of the most innovative designs in Britain.
Designed by spanish architect Enric Miralles (who tragically died in 2000 at aged 45, a few months after construction on the Scottish Parliament Building commenced).
You can even take a tour of the fantastic building whilst learning about
Scottish politics. View Details
Edinburgh is home to many museums and art galleries including The Museum of Scotland (In 2011 the Museum of Scotland reopened after extensive renovations) and the Royal Museum, which house exhibitions on the history of Scotland's land, people and culture from nature to art and culture to science. The National Gallery houses many European portraits and sculptures from Renaissance to post-imperialist art.
For some natural beauty you can take a relaxing and inspiring tour around Hollyrood Park which is situated across from Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament building.
One of the highlights of the park is to take the popular walk to the top of Arthur's Seat,
where you will be rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views of the Edinburgh, East Lothian, across the Firth of Forth to Fife and in the distance the Forth Rail and Forth Road bridges.
Over the other side of the city, down the hill from Princes Street, towards the firth of forth, you will find the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens featuring a vast range of colourful flowers, plants and trees from around the world. In the giant victorian glasshouses you will find palms and exotic plants.
Edinburgh is the number one Scottish city break. Full of scenery, architecture and history.
